Family and domestic violence are cited by young people as one of the main causes of their homelessness, or being at risk of homelessness. Types of violence include physical, sexual, emotional, financial, psychological and bullying. Violence may also include that perpetrated by young people against parents, carers or siblings, known as adolescent violence, or partner violence.

Here you will find information, resources and links as they relate to youth homelessness and family violence, including the 2008 integrated family violence response.

Integrated Family Violence Service System

The strong link between homelessness and family violence is recognised by SAAP and some programs and services are funded specifically to work with young people experiencing family and other types of violence. In 2008 the Victorian Government introduced the 'Integrated Family Violence Service System' as part of its strategy to reduce the incidence of family violence. This approach aims to have community services (including homelessness services), police, courts and government working together in a more integrated way. For more information and updates go to Domestic Violence Resource Centre Victoria.

Family Violence and HAS Standards

All SAAP services are required to be accredited by the end of 2009. For more information on the Homelessness Assistance Services (Industry) Standards, go to www.chp.org.au.

The Family Violence Code of Practice – this Code forms part of the integrated family violence approach. All services are expected to have an understanding of the Code and be able to apply it to any work with women, children and other people experiencing family violence. Time for Youth – Adolescent Violence towards Parents: leaflet

This 11 page leaflet is a comprehensive information and referral resource for parents, young people, teachers, youth workers and social workers and those working in a wide range of youth and family support and family violence service settings. The leaflet explains adolescent violence, why it happens and what to do about it.

While four of the eleven services suggested on the page "Where to go for help" are specific to the Barwon SouthWest Region, the remainder are generic services.
